Chakwera advocates for an increase in both effort and activity

 


During the fifth UN LDCs conference in Doha Qatar, President Lazarus Chakwera emphasized the importance of taking ownership of the Doha Programme of Action and called for increased support from development partner countries, multilateral development banks, and the private sector to enhance the productive capacity of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and accelerate their progress towards graduation. The President stated that financial institutions must double their efforts to facilitate access to resources for LDCs to implement the programme, and he urged civil society and the media to advocate for the interests and priorities of LDCs.

Chakwera highlighted that the global economy is interconnected and that LDCs have been most severely impacted by climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic. He expressed his vision to see all 46 LDCs graduate to middle-income status and for the Doha Programme of Action to become a celebration of achievement. He called for UN bodies to increase their efforts and financial support to save the LDCs and the global economy as a whole.

During the conference, the Deputy United Nation Secretary General Amina Mohammed identified five key deliverables that LDCs need to respond to their current challenges. Mohammed emphasized the need for strong financial support from institutions to fully support the Doha Programme of Action.
