As part of the Easter holiday celebrations, Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera has pardoned a number of prisoners, including former Homeland Security Minister Uladi Mussa, who was serving a six-year sentence for corruption related to a passport case. Mussa John, who was serving eight years for possession of chamba, and Jones Tewesa, who was convicted for failing to clear the way for the President's convoy, were also pardoned. The decision to pardon Mussa has raised concerns about the government's commitment to fighting corruption, while the pardon of Tewesa has been criticized for being delayed. Despite mixed reactions, musician Fredokiss expressed his delight at John's release, saying it shows the President is listening to the concerns of young people. This brings the total number of prisoners pardoned by Chakwera since taking office to over 1,900.
